Responding to Natural Disasters,

Terrorism & Public Health Emergencies

PFA is a set of 8 core action steps that operate on the assumption of human resilience and a recognition that strong reactions to potentially traumatic events are common and normal.

PFA is an evidence informed, modular approach to assisting individuals to reduce distress after a potentially traumatic event.

Basic objectives:

  • Establish a human connection in a non-intrusive, compassionate manner.

  • Enhance immediate and ongoing safety, and provide physical and emotional comfort.

  • Calm and orient emotionally overwhelmed or distraught survivors.

  • Help survivors to tell you specifically what their immediate needs and concerns are and, gather information as appropriate.

  • Connect survivors to social support networks.

  • Provide information to help survivors cope with the psychological impact of disasters.

  • Link the survivor to another member of a disaster response team or to local recovery systems, mental health services, public-sector services and, organization.

The PFA training is Massachusetts E-911 approved 8-hour training.

Trainees will be provided with a certification upon completion.
